8 tips to look your best in your family portrait session

We are all set! We have your date in the calendar and the date is fast approaching, if you are getting worried with what to wear and what everyone else will be wearing for your photography session, worry no more! Just keep reading because we got you covered on this blog post.

This session is not only for the kids but also for you. We often put ourselves to the side, but it’s important to also feature in our family portraits as this season will come and go in the blink of an eye.

It’s normal to feel a bit apprehensive and to not know exactly what to expect. Nearly every family I have photographed feels a little bit like that at the beginning of our session, but through activities and my guidance we will make the most of our time together, and I can assure you that things will flow. Here are some tips that I hope will help you to let loose and enjoy your photography session.

Your photography session is all about having fun:

Your portrait session is all about having fun and the interaction between you and the members of your family. Through the session we will be doing games and I will guide you to play games and move around so that everyone is relaxed and can let loose.

Prepare your kids for your photography session:

Remember to tell them that we will be meeting, and I will be taking photos of them to have memories of this time in their lives. Even if they are very young, consider having a little chat closer to our session date. During the session we will be having some games and we will be running around so they don’t have to worry about move a certain way or do a particular thing. For younger children it’s best to have your session in the morning as they are rested and ready to play.

Start by deciding what you will wear and make sure you are comfortable:

There is nothing worse than clothes that are too big or too tight. When considering your wardrobe for your family photography session, start by deciding what you will wear and make sure that you feel a million dollars before you start considering everyone else’s outfit. Melbourne weather is well known to be changing all the time and sometimes at a very short notice. Consider wearing layers and accessories to be able to change if the weather turns, there is nothing worse than being too cold or too hot, as your discomfort will show in your images.

Another option to keep in mind is to try your entire outfit including shoes to see how you feel and to make sure that everything fits well.

Consider getting your nails done:

If this is not something you do all the time, then maybe it’s best for you to skip this one. You want to look your best but you also want to remain authentic and true to yourself. If this is not you, then that’s totally fine, but maybe consider cutting your nails or have a clear polish on them as I love to include detail shots in your session.

Remember to iron shirts and dresses:

Photoshop is an incredible tool and a lot of things can be fixed, but wrinkled shirts, pants or dresses is not one. Your outfit will naturally crease in a few spots (and that’s totally fine), bit if you are wondering if you should or not iron your outfit while you are at home, then please do!

Take your phone and wallets out of your pockets:

There is nothing worse than a rectangle in the middle of your leg! Remember to bring a bag to be able to put your wallet, valuable, snacks and drink for us to carry during our session. We will be sitting down and running around, so it would be best of phones are wallet are put away.

Make sure that your underwear fits properly and it’s not too tight:

One of the most challenging issues with undergarment are bras that are too tight, or undies that are can be seen through your clothes.
