Melbourne family photography | How to find the perfect location for your photoshoot

What is a photoshoot on location?

A photoshoot on location referes to a photography session done at a park, national park, beach or marine sanctuary.

Why do families choose the outdoors for the photography session?

There are a variety of reasons why a family would prefer a photoshoot on location rather than at home. On a few occasions if asked I would suggest to have the photoshoot on location, and this is when there is a large group of people involved in the photoshoot. For extended families specially, the outdoors work a lot better as we are able to move freely and we have the option to run and walk as well as give some space to the family members that are waiting to be photographed.

Tips for choosing the perfect location for your photoshoot.

So you have your mind set on having your photoshoot outdoors, now comes the planning. For this you need to keep in mind those members of your family that will take part on your photoshoot. Do you have any family members that will struggle to walk for too long int he sand? Do you need easy access for the pram? There are a number of things you should keep in mind when choosing your location.

  1. Start by selecting the theme or vibes you want for your photoshoot

There are a number of options when it comes to vibes or themes for your photoshoot. Some sessions are more inspired by hikes and camping so forest and trails would be a better set up. If your family loves the beach then maybe it’s best a coastal location, maybe a local beach with nice rock formations? In regards to the beach, keep in mind if you have an older baby or a toddler that in most cases they will try to eat some of the sand. If your family is more urban, and inner city living, then maybe your local caffee or Melbourne CBD would be a better backdrop.

  2. Will you need a permit for that location?

A lot of people don’t realise that for a number of locations you will need a permit. The photography session doesn’t include this permit. Some of the most common locations that need a permit (and have active rangers checking) are in the Dandenong ranges (RJ Arboretum, The Alfred Nicholas gardens). Other locations like private gardens also need a permit like St Kilda Botanical gardens and Ripponlea Gardens.

  3. How accessible is your photoshoot location?

Keep in mind the accessibility of your chosen location and how far away is the parking lot from where you have to go. If the location is far away, then you run the risk of everyone being tired, moody and hot once you reach your destination. Consider also you might have to carry your toddler for some of the walk so try to pack light.

  4. How long do you have to travel to get to your chosen location?

Long travels specially towards the end of the day can be challenging for young kids. We want them to be rested and in a good mood for them to have fun and be ready to play.

  5. How busy will your location be?

If you are considering the beach during the summer months, then I suggest to have your session early int he morning to avoid the hot weather, burning feet and busy crowds. Some locations can be very popular during different times of the year, making it very challenging for your family to be in the moment and let loose.

I hope that these tips will help you making up your mind about the perfect spot for your family. I will always be able to provide suggestions on locations and samples of locations where I have done sessions in the past.

I look forward to photographing your family!
