Professional photography is not just equipment (lighting, cameras and editing skills), it’s also the knowledge behind the camera that comes with years of experience, it’s the skills to be able to put you and your family at ease and to be able to make the most of your house and the interaction with your family. Through the years I have learned to developed my skills and I am now able to see images before they happen, anticipation and being able to have a feel for what’s to come is a great asset to be able to interact with toddlers.

3 ways to get everyone involved in your family photoshoot.

My photography journey started when I wanted to photograph my own kids. It quickly became an obsession and after a few months I hit a brick wall: my kids had enough of me and my photography projects, so I started to try and come up with ways I could get them to be again my willing subjects. This has helped me a lot when planning photography sessions and dealing with older kids that might be a little shy. Here are a few ways you can get them to be involved.

  • Get the kids involved in the family photoshoot:

Depending on how old they are, keep in mind the key images you would like for you, but then leave the kids to plan an outfit, a dress up that they like. If they are a bit older then maybe they can choose their favourite place in the house or show off their bedroom. As a way to connect with the kiddos, I love to ask them to show me their room and their little treasures, it helps me to get to know their personality and it’s a place where they can relax.

  • Remember to include their ideas on your family lifestyle session:

There will always be time for a play and for a crazy idea, so make sure that you tell me about their plans so that we can include them. We can have a chat about it so they take ownership of their plan and they feel valued. Some of my favourite images have happened when the kids take ownership of their vision, it leads to spontaneity.

  • There is always bribery:

When everything else fails there is always a break and a little bribery. If there are a few kids that are taking part on the family photoshoot, I always give a bit of time if anyone is overwhelmed and sometimes a break and a snack can fix any uneasy feelings. If everything else fails then there is always bribery, but make sure that this comes at the end of our session.

I hope that these tips will help everyone to get involved and excited about your family photography session.
