Planning Your Family Photography Session at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria

Choosing one of the best Family photography locations in Melbourne is about more than finding a beautiful backdrop. It is about selecting a place where your family can relax, your children can explore safely, and your photography session feels like a little adventure rather than another item on your weekend to-do list.

As a Melbourne family photographer, the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria is one of my favourite locations not only because of its incredible scenery but because it makes family sessions easy and enjoyable. With over 38 hectares of gardens, winding paths, enormous heritage trees, ponds, bridges and quiet corners, there is always a new space to discover.

Visitors regularly describe the gardens as a peaceful escape from the city. The beautifully maintained lawns, seasonal flowers, diverse plant collections and calm atmosphere make it a favourite place for Melbourne families to spend time together. The variety of landscapes also means your gallery can have the feeling of several different locations without needing to travel anywhere else.

Practical Tips for Your Royal Botanic Gardens Family Photography Session

One of the biggest questions I receive before a Family Photography session is "Where do we park?"

The most convenient option is the Observatory Gate car park on Birdwood Avenue, located right beside the gardens. There are also several paid parking areas around Birdwood Avenue and Alexandra Avenue. On weekends and during school holidays, these areas can become busy, so I always recommend arriving 15 to 20 minutes early to avoid a last-minute stress rush with children, snacks, spare clothes and the inevitable missing shoe.

The gardens are generally open from early morning until sunset, which works perfectly with my preferred photography times. Sunrise sessions are particularly magical, with quieter pathways and soft golden light. Late afternoon sessions also provide beautiful lighting and allow children time to run around and explore before dinner.

Family Photography Ideas Beyond the Photos

One of my favourite things about photographing families here is that the session can become part of a bigger day out. Rather than arriving, taking photos and heading straight home, many families turn their session into a Melbourne adventure.

After your photographs, you can enjoy a picnic on the lawns, visit the Children's Garden (seasonal opening times apply), walk around the Ornamental Lake to watch the ducks, or stop at The Terrace café for a coffee or babyccino. The nearby Shrine of Remembrance and Kings Domain Gardens also offer beautiful walking areas if you would like to continue exploring.

These little experiences often become some of the memories your children remember most: not just "the day we took photos", but the morning they chased ducks, climbed over tree roots and shared a treat with mum and dad afterwards.

What Makes This Different From Other Family Photography Locations in Melbourne?

Many locations look beautiful in photographs, but not all of them work well for families with young children. The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria has wide pathways for prams, accessible areas, toilets, shaded spaces and plenty of room for children to move naturally.

My approach is always centred around connection rather than perfect posing. I will guide you with simple games, prompts and movement so your children can stay curious and playful. Some of the most meaningful photographs happen when nobody is looking at the camera — a tiny hand reaching for yours, a laugh after a silly joke, or your child proudly showing you a flower they have discovered.

A Local Melbourne Family Photographer Who Knows the Gardens

Having photographed families across Melbourne, I know that timing, weather, busy periods and choosing the right corners of the gardens can make a huge difference to your experience. Knowing where the best morning light falls, which paths are quieter, and where children have space to be themselves allows me to create a relaxed session that feels effortless.

If you are searching for timeless and natural Family Photography at one of the most iconic Family photography locations in Melbourne, the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria offers the perfect blend of nature, convenience and unforgettable family moments.
