Planning your Carlton Gardens family photography session should feel exciting, not overwhelming. One of the reasons I love photographing families here is that it's one of Melbourne's easiest and most accessible locations to visit, while still offering an incredible variety of backdrops for family photography, maternity photography, kids photography and relaxed lifestyle photography.

Why Carlton Gardens is So Easy to Visit
Located on the northern edge of Melbourne's CBD, Carlton Gardens is one of the most convenient photography locations in the city. Sitting beside the Melbourne Museum and the historic Royal Exhibition Building, it's easy to reach whether you're travelling by car, tram or train.
Unlike many photography locations around Melbourne, you don't need to venture far from the city to enjoy wide open lawns, towering heritage trees and beautiful gardens. Within a few minutes of arriving, you'll feel like you've escaped the busy streets altogether.

Getting to Carlton Gardens
By Tram
Public transport couldn't be easier.
The closest stop is Melbourne Museum / Nicholson Street (Stop 11), serviced by Tram 96. Tram 86 also stops nearby along Nicholson Street, making Carlton Gardens easy to access from both the CBD and Melbourne's northern suburbs.
If you're already exploring the city, the Free City Circle Tram is another convenient option. Simply hop off near Victoria Parade before enjoying a short walk to the gardens.
By Train
The nearest railway station is Parliament Station. From there it's approximately a ten-minute walk along Lonsdale Street before reaching the southern entrance to Carlton Gardens.
By Car
There is paid parking available around the Melbourne Museum and throughout the surrounding streets. Street parking can usually be found nearby, although weekends and school holidays are naturally busier.
Before every session, I'll send you an exact meeting location and recommend the easiest parking option based on the time of day.
Where We'll Meet
To make things simple, I usually meet families beneath the magnificent Moreton Bay Fig Tree near Nicholson Street.
It's easy to find, offers plenty of shade and provides a great starting point before we begin exploring the gardens together.
The Best Time for Family Photography
Lighting is one of the biggest factors that influences your photographs.
Sunrise Sessions
Morning sessions are ideal if you have younger children.
The gardens are generally much quieter, the light is beautifully soft and toddlers are often at their happiest earlier in the day. The peaceful atmosphere also allows us to photograph popular locations before visitors begin arriving.
Golden Hour
For older children and families with school-aged kids, the hour before sunset is usually my favourite time to photograph.
Golden light filters through the enormous elm trees, the Royal Exhibition Building glows beautifully in the background and the gardens take on a warm, timeless feel that's perfect for natural family portraits.
What to Bring
The beauty of lifestyle photography is that you don't need much.
I recommend bringing:
Water for everyone.
A small snack for younger children.
Baby wipes.
A favourite toy or comforter if needed.
A picnic rug if you'd like to finish with relaxed family photographs on the lawn.
Leave the rest to me. My sessions focus on genuine interactions rather than lots of props.
Facilities at Carlton Gardens
One reason Carlton Gardens works so well for families is the excellent facilities nearby.
Playground
The children's playground is a favourite with younger kids. I usually recommend saving it until the end of the session, giving children something exciting to look forward to after we've explored the gardens together.
Public Toilets
Public toilets are located near the Melbourne Museum and Royal Exhibition Building. They're generally clean, well maintained and easy to access during your session.
Dogs Welcome
Dogs are welcome throughout the gardens provided they're kept on a lead. If your four-legged family member is coming along, I'd love to include them in a few photographs too.
Picnic Areas
The expansive lawns, shaded benches and mature trees make Carlton Gardens one of Melbourne's best picnic spots. Many families choose to enjoy lunch or coffee nearby after their session, turning the experience into a relaxed family day out.
What Happens During Your Session?
One of the most common questions I receive is whether children need to behave or know how to pose.
The answer is absolutely not.
My approach is relaxed and child-led. Instead of asking everyone to smile at the camera, we'll walk together, explore the gardens, look for ducks around the ponds, admire the fountains and let your children simply enjoy the space.
The photographs happen naturally through those little interactions.
That approach is what makes my family photography sessions feel authentic and why Carlton Gardens works so beautifully for young families.
