Best Carlton Gardens Photography Locations for Families - Melbourne Photographer
One of the reasons I recommend Carlton Gardens so often is the incredible variety it offers within a relatively compact space. Unlike many parks where every photograph starts to look the same, Carlton Gardens combines heritage architecture, grand tree-lined avenues, ornamental fountains, peaceful ponds and expansive lawns, allowing every gallery to tell a unique story.
As a Melbourne family photographer, I rarely stay in one spot for an entire session. Instead, we wander through the gardens, following the best light and letting children explore naturally along the way. Whether you're planning family photography, maternity photography, kids photography or relaxed lifestyle photography, these are the locations I return to time and time again.
The Exhibition Fountain
The Exhibition Fountain is undoubtedly the centrepiece of Carlton Gardens.
Designed by sculptor Joseph Hochgurtel for the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition, this magnificent fountain immediately catches your eye as you enter the gardens. Depending on the time of day, we can photograph with the Royal Exhibition Building rising behind the fountain, creating one of Melbourne's most recognisable heritage backdrops.
When the light changes throughout the afternoon, I often move to the opposite side of the fountain, using the wide lawns and perfectly aligned avenue of trees to create a softer, greener setting. Even on days when the fountain isn't operating, its beautiful stonework remains an elegant feature for timeless family portraits.
The French Fountain
While the Exhibition Fountain attracts most visitors, the smaller French Fountain nearby is one of Carlton Gardens' hidden gems.
Located beside the Royal Exhibition Building, it provides all the charm of a heritage fountain without the larger crowds. This makes it a wonderful option for families with younger children who may become distracted in busier areas.
The surrounding gardens also create a quieter atmosphere for maternity photography, where slower, more intimate moments often produce the most meaningful photographs.
The Central Lawn
The broad lawn directly in front of the Royal Exhibition Building offers one of the most iconic views in Melbourne.
This location works beautifully for larger family portraits, giving everyone room to spread out while showcasing the grandeur of the heritage architecture behind you. During the warmer months, the mature trees around the edges of the lawn provide welcome shade, allowing us to comfortably photograph even on bright summer afternoons.
Children also love the freedom this space provides. Instead of asking them to stand still, I'll often encourage games, races or simply walking hand in hand across the grass to create genuine moments full of movement and laughter.
The Tree-Lined Avenues
One of my favourite features of Carlton Gardens is its beautiful network of tree-lined pathways.
Towering elm and oak trees create natural leading lines that draw your eye through each photograph while providing soft, filtered light throughout much of the day. These paths are especially beautiful during autumn, when golden leaves blanket the ground and transform the gardens into one of Melbourne's most colourful locations for family photography.
They're equally perfect for lifestyle photography, allowing families to walk together naturally rather than posing in one place.
The Southern Lake
Tucked away on the southern side of the gardens is a peaceful pond surrounded by mature trees.
From here, it's possible to frame the Royal Exhibition Building through the surrounding foliage, creating photographs that feel both intimate and unmistakably Melbourne.
Families often pause here to watch the ducks gliding across the water, and those quiet moments of curiosity frequently become some of my favourite images from the session.
The South-West Pond
If you're looking for something a little different, the pond on the south-western side of Carlton Gardens offers a wonderful contrast.
Gentle hills create more dynamic compositions than the flatter sections of the park, while the surrounding modern city buildings appear in the background. I love using this area to blend Melbourne's contemporary skyline with the timeless beauty of the historic gardens.
The resident ducks are another bonus. They're often the perfect distraction for younger children who would rather explore than look towards the camera, helping create authentic smiles and natural interactions.
Seasonal Colour Throughout the Gardens
One of the greatest advantages of Carlton Gardens is that it never looks exactly the same twice.
Spring brings colourful flower beds bursting into bloom, creating vibrant backdrops for maternity photography and young families.
Summer fills the gardens with rich green foliage and shaded walkways beneath the enormous elm trees.
Autumn is easily one of my favourite seasons. The changing leaves create warm golden tones throughout the gardens, while children love collecting colourful leaves and throwing them into the air during the session.
Even winter has its own charm, with softer light filtering through the branches and fewer visitors creating a quieter atmosphere.
Choosing the Right Location for Your Family
Every family is different, which is why I never photograph every session in exactly the same way.
Families with toddlers often spend more time around the ponds and open lawns, where children can safely explore and interact with nature. Couples expecting their first baby usually enjoy the quieter fountain areas and tree-lined avenues, while extended families often prefer the spacious central lawn with the Royal Exhibition Building as a spectacular backdrop.
The beauty of Carlton Gardens is that everything is within a comfortable walking distance, allowing us to create a wonderfully varied gallery without feeling rushed.
